Summary of Events

The Arab Parliament called for the immediate withdrawal of the Arab League Observers’ mission from Syria as the regime has not ceased its crimes against the people. The Parliament said that the regime is in violation of the protocol and that the presence of the observers’ mission only servers to provide a cover for its atrocities. The Parliament then called for an emergency Arab League meeting to discuss the termination of the observers’ mission to Syria. The League said that it is still too early to evaluate the performance of the mission which will remain in Syria for an entire month. Twenty more observers will be sent to Syria from Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Tunisia. New reports have shown that the regime is sending security forces in civilian clothes to speak with observers and falsify ground reports.

The Assad regime continued its crimes against the people after one day of relative calmness, as security forces opened fire at the thousands of demonstrators who were waiting for the arrival of observers in the Damascus suburb of Daraya. Security forces also wrecked the cars and shops in the area. Meanwhile, observers visited the Damascus suburb of Moadamiya and reported no presence whatsoever of any armed groups or individuals. In Idlib, security forces opened random fire at demonstrators in the central market in Kafar Takhim, and brutally attacked and arrested many. Army defections were reported within the ranks of the Syrian Army present at the Kafar Aweid intersection. The town of Shezar in the suburbs of Hama is under heavy siege and bombardment with tanks and heavy artillery, triggering fears of massacres in the town.

In Aleppo, security forces arrested two girls and took them to the criminal Security branch in Ashrafiya. Hundreds of the city’s residents were outraged and staged a sit-in at the security branch until they were eventually released.

Economically, 90% of the property on the real estate market is on a market freeze, with demand plummeting and economic conditions deteriorating. The real estate market crisis in Syria started when the regime came to power and instituted corrupt and outdated real estate laws. This crisis escalated in the past decade when the market was monopolized by businessmen affiliated with the regime, thus increasing random and informal housing developments to account for 35% of the market share.

Summary of Events

The last day of the year was relatively calm in comparison to the previous nine months. Despite the massive demonstrations and sit-ins that stretched all over Syria, Assad’s forces did not try to disperse them with excessive violence as usual. It seems that the regime’s forces have been on a new year’s leave.

In a recorded video, an Arab League observer declared he personally witnessed the presence of snipers on top of the roof of a nearby building. The member said that the observers’ mission will withdraw from Syria if the sniper and all army units were not withdrawn from residential areas.

Meanwhile, the Commander of the Free Syrian Army Riyad Asa’ad said that he instructed his forces to stop all attacks against the regime until a meeting with the observers’ mission is secured. Asa’ad said that his forces were not able to establish a direct contact with the mission yet. The mission has been in Syria for a week now, and will remain for one month.

Internationally, pressure on the regime is expected to mount as Western governments and organizations will be resuming their activities after a holidays halt.

Summary of Events

Over 250,000 protesters participated in today’s demonstrations across 382 hot spots in Syria, setting another high record for the Syrian revolution. It was also the first time that SNC president Burhan Ghalioun speaks live with demonstrators in Khaldiya, Homs, giving respect to the sacrifices of the people in Syria and reaffirming the commitment of the SNC to topple the regime of Assad.

The regime forces responded forcefully to the massive protests witnessed today. The number of civilian casualties continued to rise today especially in the areas visited by the observers’ mission. Residents assumed that they will be safer in the presence of the observers’ mission but were surprised to face a fierce killing spree by the regime. This took place in Hama today, as massive demonstrations with over 30,000 participants took off from the Hamidiya neighbourhood heading towards Asi square where observers were stationed. Another group joined the protest thus increasing their numbers to 80,000. This massive demonstration was quickly dispersed after security forces opened machinegun fire at them coupled with nail bombs, tear gas, and nerve gas. In an attempt to justify the visible use of force observed by one of the monitors today, the regime claimed some observers were encouraging protesters to take arms. On another note, it was discovered that one of the observers’ mission members, Anwar Malek, is an Algerian intelligence officer with a track record of atrocities and possible crimes against humanity.

The city of Idlib greeted Arab monitors with over 150,000 demonstrators today. However, they were not able to approach the Mission because of the presence of accompanying security forces. The observers’ mission only coordinates with the Assad regime and not with opposition factions based in or outside of Syria making them more vulnerable to fall in the trap of regime deceptions. Security forces killed at least 38 demonstrators today, as it opened fire at hundreds of thousands who demonstrated on the Friday of “March to freedom squares”.

The Assad government informed the different branches of the Chamber of Industry in all Syrian cities that it will be cutting off electricity for one full day every week in all industrial cities and quarters. The regime claims that the shortage in electric supply is a direct result of the oil sanctions imposed on the regime by global forces. In Aleppo alone, this decision will lead to the suspension of production in 900 factories, and an income downgrade for around 40,000 employees, which will likely lead to the loosening of the regime’s control over the city.

Summary of Events

The director of the Arab League observers’ mission to Syria, Muhammad Ahmad al-Dabi, stated that the observers did not witness anything “scary” in Homs, and added that conditions of the city are reassuring. After concluding their visit to Homs today, the mission will be heading to Hama, Daraa, and Idlib tomorrow. A video circulated on YouTube shows a resident from Homs talking to an observer with sounds of gunshots in the background. The resident asked the observer to declare that he could not cross the street due to sniper fire, but the observer declined claiming that public statements can only be made by the director. Furthermore, observers did not enter Baba Amr as they refused to enter the neighbourhood without a security escort. Security forces also denied the observers entry to Talbiseh and asked the city to appoint a group of representatives to meet up with a Presidential delegation composed of the Resident’s brother-in-law Asef Chawkat, Interior Affairs ministry Ibrahim Shaar, and Director of National Security Hisham Elekhtyar.

Internationally, the fourth UNSC meeting to discuss the draft resolution on Syria failed, as Russia and China refused the amendments put forth by Western countries. Russia refused an arms embargo on the Assad regime as it has acquired numerous arms contracts with the regime since the beginning of the revolution.

Syrian TV announced that the Assad regime released 755 detainees whose “hands were not stained with blood”. This announcement comes as an appeasement to the Arab League which has agreed to pressure media outlets with heavy-handed coverage against the Assad regime to end their negative coverage. This amendment will likely end the activities of most Syrian anti-regime news channels in the region. It is noted that the 755 detainees released by the regime are only a small fraction of the number of incarcerated demonstrators, which is closer to 212,000 according to some unconfirmed reports.
